25 lakh new gas connections approved under Ujjwala Yojana

More than 12 crore families across India are benefiting from the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY).

This scheme provides free LPG connections to poor families so they can cook food safely on gas stoves instead of using coal, wood, or cow dung.

Under this scheme, a gas cylinder is available for just ₹550.

Recently, the Central Government approved 25 lakh new free gas connections, which will raise the total number of connections to 10.58 crore.

For this expansion, the government has sanctioned ₹676 crore.

What is the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana?

The scheme was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 1, 2016, from Ballia, Uttar Pradesh.

Its main aim is to provide clean fuel (LPG) to poor households, especially women in rural areas, so they do not have to depend on polluting fuels that harm health.

In Phase 1, more than 10 crore LPG connections were distributed.

In Ujjwala 2.0, by December 2024, more than 2.34 crore connections were given.

Key Features of Ujjwala Yojana

Promotes clean fuel instead of coal, wood, or cow dung.

Connection is issued in the name of the female head of the family.

Free LPG connection for BPL, SC/ST families.

Financial help:

₹2200 subsidy for 14.2 kg cylinder

₹1300 subsidy for 5 kg cylinder

Interest-free loans for gas stoves and refills.

Stove cost: ₹565 (1-burner), ₹990 (2-burner).

First LPG refill is free.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicant must be a woman aged 18 years or above.

Must be an Indian citizen.

Eligible groups include:

BPL families, SC/ST households, EBCs.

Beneficiaries of PM Awas Yojana (Rural), Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY).

Tea workers, tribal families, island dwellers, and poor families listed in the SECC list.

Bank account details (with IFSC code)

Passport-size photo

BPL certificate/SECC list name

e-KYC is mandatory (not required in Assam & Meghalaya)

How to Apply for Ujjwala Yojana

Online Application Steps

Visit the official Ujjwala Yojana website.

Click on Apply for New Ujjwala 2.0 Connection.

Select your preferred gas agency (Indane, Bharat Gas, HP Gas).

Register with name, mobile, and email.

Log in and fill details:

State, district, pin code, ration card info, family details.

Select cylinder type, enter bank details.

Save reference number, print the form, and visit the gas agency with all documents.

Offline Application Steps

Download the KYC form and Annexure I (Self Declaration Form).

Fill Annexure II (Pre-Installation Check Form).

Submit all forms and documents at the nearest gas agency.

This scheme ensures that poor families can cook safely and live healthier lives without the harmful smoke of traditional fuels.
