Twitter Co-Founder Launches Bitchat That Works Without the Internet

Twitter’s co-founder, Jack Dorsey, has launched a unique messaging app called Bitchat that allows users to chat without using the internet.

The app is still in its beta version and is currently available only to iPhone users via Apple’s TestFlight.

Unlike WhatsApp, Signal, or Telegram, Bitchat uses a decentralised, privacy-first method for messaging.

How Bitchat Works

Bitchat uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) mesh networking. It connects phones within a 30-metre range to form a peer-to-peer network.

As people move, their devices help pass messages to other nearby users—creating a relay system. This allows messages to travel long distances without the need for Wi-Fi or mobile data.

All messages are end-to-end encrypted and are not stored on any central server. Messages automatically disappear after a short time, and all data stays only on the users’ devices. This makes the app more private and resistant to censorship.

No Sign-Up, No Servers, No Internet Needed

Unlike most messaging apps, Bitchat does not ask for a phone number or email to register. It works entirely without the internet—not even Wi-Fi is needed.

This makes it especially helpful in areas with no internet access, during natural disasters, or in regions with restricted connectivity.

Since there is no account setup and messages auto-delete, users can chat anonymously. This is useful for journalists, activists, or anyone looking for high privacy in their communication.

Current Beta and Future Plans

Bitchat was launched on Apple TestFlight and quickly reached its 10,000-user limit. The beta is focused on making the app more efficient, especially for battery life and message delivery.

Jack Dorsey has shared the app’s whitepaper and beta invite link publicly.

Future updates will likely add Wi-Fi support, allowing users to share photos and videos, while still keeping the app decentralised and secure.
