Weather Warning Issued for Chennai and Nearby Areas

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for Chennai and nearby districts for the next two days, starting from December 17.

This warning is due to a low-pressure area forming in the Bay of Bengal caused by atmospheric circulation.

The system is expected to strengthen further and move in a west-northwesterly direction toward the coastal areas.

Rainfall Forecast and Alerts

An orange alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in Chennai and nearby districts, including Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, on December 17 and 18.

A heavy rainfall warning has also been announced for Chennai on December 19.

Light rain is expected to begin in Chennai around 1 pm on Tuesday and intensify, with very heavy rainfall likely on Wednesday.

The impact of this weather system is likely to continue until December 20, with rainfall persisting across many areas of Chennai.

Other areas likely to experience heavy rainfall on December 17 and 18 include:

December 17: Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, and Puducherry.

December 18: Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Puducherry.

Additional districts such as Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Vellore, Ariyalur, Mayiladuthurai, and Karaikal are also expected to receive heavy rainfall.

Rainfall Likely to Persist Until December 20

The IMD has stated that the low-pressure system’s impact will last until December 20, with continued rainfall in Chennai

and nearby areas. Residents are advised to stay updated on weather developments and take necessary precautions.
