Google has decided to stop producing its popular Chromecast streaming device.
After being on the market for over 10 years and selling more than 100 million units worldwide, the company will soon deplete its remaining inventory.
Google plans to replace Chromecast with a new device called the Google TV Streamer, which will be an upgraded version of the original.
Launched in 2013
Google first introduced the Chromecast streaming device in 2013. This device allowed users to stream content from their phones and computers directly to their televisions.
It quickly became one of Google’s most successful hardware products.
The small, affordable dongle connects to the TV through the HDMI port, making it easy for users to set up and use.
“Technology has changed a lot since the launch of the original Chromecast,” wrote Majd Bakr, VP of Engineering, Health and Home at Google, in a blog post.
Many Variants Over the Years
Throughout its 11-year run, the Chromecast lineup saw several generations and variants, including the Chromecast Audio and Chromecast Ultra.
Bakr further explained that the new Google TV streamer represents the next step in evolving streaming TV devices,
adding more capabilities to smart TVs while using the same core Chromecast technology.
Unlike the previous Chromecast models, which functioned primarily as casting dongles, the upcoming Google TV streamer will also serve as a smart home device.
It features a processor that is 22% faster than the Chromecast with Google TV and supports Thread and Matter smart home standards.
While Google will no longer produce new Chromecast devices, the company will continue to provide software
and security updates for existing Chromecasts. The latest Chromecast with Google TV was released in 2022.
