Stock Market Holidays October 2026 will give traders fewer regular trading days as the BSE and NSE remain closed for 11 days, including weekends and holidays for Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra.

The closures may affect trading schedules and settlement planning.

Stock Market Holidays October 2026

The first market closure in October will be on Friday, October 2, for Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti.

The following Saturday and Sunday, October 3 and 4, will also be non-trading days, creating a three-day break from regular equity-market trading.

The market will then remain closed on October 10 and 11 because they fall on Saturday and Sunday. Another weekend break will follow on October 17 and 18.

Tuesday, October 20, will be a trading holiday for Dussehra. According to the exchange holiday calendar, regular trading will remain closed on that day, while certain commodity-related sessions have separate timings.

October Trading Breaks Continue

The final weekend closures of the month will fall on October 24, 25 and October 31.

Counting the two festival holidays with all the Saturdays and Sundays gives 11 non-trading days during October.

This means investors and traders will have to account for the shorter number of regular market sessions while planning trades, fund requirements and settlement-related activities.

How Holidays Can Affect Trade Settlements

A market holiday does not mean that existing investments disappear or stop being held.

Shares already present in an investor’s demat account remain there, but new trades cannot normally be executed on days when the relevant exchange segment is closed.

Trading holidays can also affect settlement schedules because intervening exchange holidays and weekends are excluded when determining settlement days.

NSE states that its rolling settlement process accounts for such holidays when calculating settlement dates.

What Traders Should Check Before October

Investors should check the relevant exchange calendar before placing orders around long weekends and festival holidays.

The NSE calendar also notes that November 8, 2026, will be a trading holiday for Diwali Laxmi Pujan, with Muhurat Trading scheduled separately on that day.

The October closures are therefore important mainly for planning regular trading activity and settlement timelines.

The exact effect on an individual trade can depend on the market segment and the type of transaction involved.
