Sim Card New Rules: Maximum of 4 SIM Cards per Individual

New Delhi :

In a bid to combat the menace of unwanted calls and cyber fraud, a significant change is underway.

It is anticipated that the government will unveil new subscriber guidelines today, following a nod from Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav.

Under these impending regulations, an individual will be restricted to acquiring a maximum of 4 SIM cards per identification.

This strategic move aims to empower citizens by curbing the onslaught of unsolicited communication.

Curbing Cyber Fraud and Unwanted Calls

In a proactive measure to counter cyber fraud and halt unsolicited calls, the government is gearing up to introduce a revised SIM card policy. The forthcoming guidelines are expected to be announced by Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to ensuring a secure and peaceful communication environment for the populace.

Reduction from Previous Limits

Previously, individuals could hold up to 9 SIM cards under a single identity. This is now set to change, with the maximum number being restricted to 4 SIM cards per ID.

The aim is to streamline the process and enhance customer verification procedures, while mitigating potential avenues for misuse and fraud.

Digital Verification Process

In a marked shift towards digital processes, customer verification for obtaining SIM cards will be entirely digitized. Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnav’s endorsement of the new guidelines is emblematic of the government’s commitment to strengthening the digital framework to thwart nefarious activities.

Enhanced Tracking via Sancharsathi Portal

To facilitate monitoring and regulation, the sancharsaathi portal will provide visibility into the number of connections registered under an individual’s name.

This strategic step will curtail the ability of unauthorized entities to exploit multiple SIM cards for illegitimate purposes, which often included making unwanted calls.

Transition Process for Existing SIM Cards

While the new rule establishes a cap of 4 SIM cards per ID, it will not impact existing SIM cards already associated with a single ID.

This move highlights the government’s balanced approach to maintaining continuity while fortifying security measures for the future.
