But what happens if your mobile data suddenly runs out or the internet stops working while making a payment? If you are not carrying cash, the situation can become quite stressful.
The good news is that there is a solution. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) offers a special service that allows users to make UPI payments even without internet access.
You do not need Wi-Fi or mobile data, and the service works on both smartphones and basic feature phones.
Things You Need Before Using the Service
Before you start using this offline UPI facility, make sure these three conditions are met:
Your mobile number is linked to your bank account.
UPI is already activated on that mobile number.
Your phone has an active mobile network for calls and SMS.
How to Send Money Without Internet
If your internet is not working, follow these simple steps to complete a UPI transaction.
Step 1: Dial *99#
Open the dialer on your phone and call *99# using the mobile number linked to your bank account. This service is supported by most major banks across India.
Step 2: Select “Send Money”
After dialing, a menu will appear on your screen. It will show options such as Send Money, Request Money, Check Balance, and My Profile.
Choose the number corresponding to the “Send Money” option.
Step 3: Choose Your Payment Method
Next, select how you want to transfer the money. You can send funds using:
UPI ID
Mobile number
Bank account number and IFSC code
Pick the option that is most convenient for you.
Step 4: Enter Recipient Details and Amount
Now enter the recipient’s details based on the method you selected. After that, enter the amount you want to transfer.
Some banks also allow users to add a short note, such as rent, food, or electricity bill payment. Double-check all details before moving ahead.
Step 5: Enter Your UPI PIN
Finally, enter your UPI PIN to authorize the transaction.
Once the PIN is entered, the payment will be processed instantly. You will receive a confirmation message on your screen as well as through SMS after the transaction is successful.
Important Things to Remember
A Small Service Charge May Apply
Your telecom operator, such as Jio, Airtel, or Vi, may charge a small fee for using the *99# offline UPI service.
Supports Multiple Indian Languages
The service is available in several Indian languages apart from English. This makes digital banking easier for users in rural and regional areas.
Registered Mobile Number Must Be Active
The offline UPI feature will only work if the mobile number linked to your bank account is active and able to receive calls and SMS.
A Handy Backup When Internet Fails
The *99# service can be extremely useful during network issues, data outages, or emergencies.
Since it works without internet access, it ensures that you can continue making payments anytime and anywhere, even with a basic mobile phone.
