If you regularly use India Post’s Speed Post service for government documents, education-related paperwork, or business purposes, there is an important update for you.
India Post has changed the rules for classifying Speed Post items.
From August 1, 2026, items sent through Speed Post will be clearly divided into two categories: documents and parcels.
If your envelope contains anything other than paper documents, you will have to pay parcel charges instead of document charges.
What Will Be Considered a Document Under the New Rules?
Under the updated system, only paper-based materials will qualify as documents.
Items that will be accepted as documents include:
Educational certificates
Aadhaar, PAN, and other government document copies
Legal papers
Bank-related documents
Application forms
Other important paper records
However, if an envelope contains any additional item such as a gift, card, sample, or any other material, it will no longer be treated as a document.
Instead, it will be classified as a parcel, and parcel-specific charges will apply.
Why Has India Post Introduced This Change?
According to India Post, many customers were sending small items by presenting them as documents.
This created confusion while deciding the correct charges for shipments.
The new classification system aims to make the process clearer and avoid disputes between customers and postal authorities.
By separating documents and parcels, India Post expects Speed Post booking and pricing to become simpler and more transparent.
Speed Post Charges After the Update
The starting price of Speed Post depends on the weight of the item and the distance it needs to travel.
Current charges include:
Local delivery up to 50 grams: ₹19 (GST extra)
Delivery to other locations up to 50 grams: ₹47 (GST extra)
Charges increase depending on the weight of the package and the delivery distance.
What Speed Post Users Should Keep in Mind
People who frequently send documents through Speed Post should check the contents of their envelopes carefully before booking.
From August 1, only genuine paper documents will qualify as document shipments.
Any additional item inside the envelope will be treated as a parcel and charged accordingly.
