The number of Indians traveling abroad has been increasing rapidly.
Easy visa options such as visa-free entry and visa-on-arrival facilities have made international travel more convenient by reducing paperwork and approval delays.
However, Indian passport holders planning overseas trips need to be careful. Several countries, including Iran, Bolivia, Cape Verde, and Nicaragua, have changed their entry rules for Indian citizens in 2026.
India’s Passport Ranking Changes
According to the latest Henley Passport Index, India’s passport ranking has moved to 81st position.
In February 2026, India was ranked 75th.
Indian passport holders currently have visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 55 countries, compared to 57 countries last year.
This decline means some destinations that earlier allowed easier entry now require Indian travellers to apply for a visa or get approval before visiting.
Countries That Have Changed Visa Rules for Indians
Iran Ends Visa-Free Entry for Indian Passport Holders
Iran was earlier considered a convenient destination for Indian travellers as they could visit the country without applying for a visa.
Tourists could explore famous attractions such as the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque and Tehran’s Grand Bazaar with fewer travel restrictions.
However, Iran suspended its visa-free facility for ordinary Indian passport holders in November 2025.
Travellers planning to visit Iran must now check the latest visa requirements before making travel plans.
Bolivia Removes Visa-on-Arrival Facility
Bolivia has also changed its entry rules for Indian citizens.
Earlier, Indian travellers could get a visa on arrival, making travel arrangements easier.
However, the country has now removed this facility, and visitors need to follow the updated visa process before travelling.
Cape Verde Requires Visa Before Travel
Cape Verde, known for its peaceful environment and beautiful beaches, has become a popular destination among international tourists.
But from January 1, 2026, the country removed its visa-on-arrival facility for citizens of 96 countries, including India.
Earlier, Indian travellers could complete online registration through the EASE platform, pay the required fees, and receive a visa after arrival.
Now, travellers must obtain a valid visa before entering the country.
Nicaragua Introduces Prior Approval Requirement
Nicaragua has also tightened its entry rules for Indian passport holders.
From February 16, 2026, Indians are no longer eligible for visa-on-arrival facilities in Nicaragua.
Indian travellers have been placed under the Category C or Consulted Visa category.
This means they must get approval from Nicaraguan immigration authorities before travelling.
Without prior approval, entry through airports may become difficult.
