If you are planning to study or work in New Zealand, this update is important for you. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has changed its visa rules and made the Police Clearance Certificate (PCC) mandatory for many visa applicants.

The immigration department has clearly stated that applications submitted without the required police certificate may be rejected.

Indian students and professionals planning to move to New Zealand should complete this step before applying for a visa.

Police Certificate Must Be Submitted With the Visa Application

According to Immigration New Zealand (INZ), applicants must upload their Police Clearance Certificate while submitting their visa application.

Simply providing proof that you have applied for the certificate or sharing a receipt will not be accepted.

The only exceptions are applicants from Fiji, Hong Kong, and Israel, where the police authorities send the certificate directly to INZ.

The agency has also said that it generally will not contact applicants later to ask for the missing document.

Visa decisions will be made based on the documents submitted with the application.

Who Could Be Affected?

The new rule mainly affects people applying from outside New Zealand who plan to stay in the country for more than 24 months.

If such applicants fail to submit a Police Clearance Certificate, their visa application is more likely to be rejected.

In some situations, INZ may issue a visa with a shorter validity instead of the requested duration.

If applicants later wish to stay longer, they will have to submit a fresh visa application, attach the required police certificate, and pay the application fee again.

What If You Are Already in New Zealand?

Applicants who are already in New Zealand and have not yet completed 24 months of stay may get a short deadline, such as five working days, to submit the Police Clearance Certificate.

If they still do not provide the document within the given time, INZ may grant only a shorter-term visa, allowing a total stay of up to 24 months.

Apply Only After Collecting All Documents

Immigration New Zealand has advised students and workers to collect all required documents before submitting their visa applications.

Since the time taken to issue a Police Clearance Certificate differs from country to country, applicants should apply for the certificate well in advance.

Doing so can help avoid delays, reduce the risk of visa rejection, and keep study or work plans on track.
