New Ration Card Rules have introduced a merit-based system to help eligible and needy families get ration cards even after the allotted quota is reached.
The Food and Logistics Department has upgraded its software to select applicants according to their eligibility and need.
Earlier, the process of issuing new ration cards could stop once a district reached its allotted quota. Under the new system, applications can be assessed through a software-generated merit list.
New Ration Card Rules Use Merit System
Under the upgraded system, applicants receive marks based on the information and details provided while applying for a ration card.
The software uses these marks to prepare a merit list. Families considered more needy and eligible can then be given priority while issuing new ration cards.
The aim is to make sure that deserving families are not automatically left out simply because the existing ration card quota has already been reached.
Cancer and Leprosy Patients Get Priority
The merit system gives additional priority to people facing particularly difficult circumstances.
Cancer patients, leprosy patients and extremely poor families are among those who can receive special points under the system.
These additional marks can improve their position on the merit list, helping the most vulnerable applicants receive priority.
However, applicants still need to meet the applicable eligibility requirements. A ration card is not issued automatically simply because an application has been submitted.
10 Families Selected From 150 Applications
The impact of the new system has already been seen at the district level.
According to the information provided, 150 applications for new ration cards were received in September.
After the applications were examined through the software-based merit system, 10 eligible families were selected and issued new ration cards.
District Supply Officer Rajiv Kumar Mishra said the merit system became effective after the government’s software upgrade.
Eligible Families Can Apply Despite Full Quota
The biggest change under the New Ration Card Rules is that reaching the quota no longer necessarily brings the selection process to a complete halt for eligible applicants.
Instead, the merit system can be used to identify families with greater need and give them priority based on the prescribed criteria.
Applicants should provide accurate information and supporting documents while applying because the details submitted in the application are used for assessment.
The new system is intended to make the selection process more transparent while giving priority to needy and vulnerable families.
