The central government has decided to include Vedic Mathematics in the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks for classes 6 to 8 in Uttar Pradesh as part of a major academic reform.
Vedic Maths to Be Integrated into NCERT Curriculum
This move aims to align the national curriculum with regional educational goals for government schools in the state.
Officials from the basic education department confirmed that the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Uttar Pradesh, has issued formal instructions to include Vedic Math content in NCERT books.
The implementation process will be led by subject experts from the State Institute of Science Education (SISE), Prayagraj, who will handle the curriculum design.
This change will impact over 30 lakh students studying in upper primary and composite schools (Classes 1 to 8) across the state.
Why This Matters
Vedic Mathematics is seen as a complementary approach to modern math teaching. It aims to offer students a well-rounded education by blending traditional Indian knowledge with current mathematical practices.
Vedic Maths is considered a part of India’s ancient intellectual traditions.
“We are upgrading NCERT books to include Vedic Mathematics. This will help students appreciate India’s heritage and improve their math skills,” said Anil Bhushan Chaturvedi, Director of SISE.
Currently, the NCERT math book “Ganit Prakash” used in Classes 6 to 8 is known for its quality and structure, but it doesn’t include any Vedic Math topics.
On the other hand, “Ganit Manthan” textbooks used by the UP Basic Education Board only touch upon Vedic techniques in a limited way.
Now, efforts are being made to bridge this gap by revising textbooks in both Hindi and English mediums.
Model Papers for Senior Classes Also in Progress
In addition to textbook updates, model papers for Classes 11 and 12 are also being planned.
Experts from SISE, Prayagraj, will prepare 25 model papers each in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology for students in the Science stream studying under the UP Board.
Earlier, model papers were only prepared for Classes 9 and 10.
But for the first time, SISE has been assigned the responsibility of creating model question papers for Classes 11 and 12 as well, confirmed Director Anil Bhushan Chaturvedi.
