ITR Filing Deadline

For most individuals whose accounts are not audited, the last date to file ITR is July 31, 2025.

Though the Income Tax Department sometimes extends the deadline, this does not happen often. So, it is best to file your return on time to avoid any issues.

What Happens If ITR Is Filed Late?

If you do not file your ITR by the due date, you may have to pay interest and a penalty.

Interest is charged on the unpaid tax amount at 1% per month or part of a month.

If your total income is less than ₹5 lakh, the late filing penalty is ₹1,000.

If your income is above ₹5 lakh, and you file the return after the deadline but before December 31, 2025, the penalty is ₹5,000.

Also, if you miss the deadline, you will not be allowed to carry forward any losses from business or capital gains to the next financial years.

Deadline for Audited Accounts

For taxpayers or professionals whose accounts need to be audited, the last date to file the ITR is October 31, 2025.

How to Choose the Correct ITR Form

Different ITR forms are available based on the type of taxpayer—like salaried individuals, businesses, NGOs, or trusts.

Choosing the correct form is very important. Filing the wrong form may lead to the rejection of your return or a penalty.

What is Form 16 and When Will You Get It?

Salaried employees receive Form 16 from their employers once TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) details are updated in Form 26AS. Employers generally issue Form 16 by June 15.

However, even if you don’t get Form 16, you can still file your ITR using Form 26AS and other income-related documents. Filing your return on time is simple and helps avoid penalties and interest.
