The Government of India has introduced the Electronic Overseas Citizen of India (e-OCI) Card, making it easier for OCI cardholders to travel internationally.
Launched by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the e-OCI card is a digital version of the traditional OCI booklet.
It can be stored on your smartphone and used for verification during international travel, reducing the need to carry the physical booklet every time.
How to Download Your e-OCI Card
Existing OCI cardholders and newly approved applicants can download their digital card through the official OCI Services portal.
Follow these simple steps:
Visit the official OCI Services website and log in to your account.
If you are using the portal for the first time, register using the same email ID that was used during your original OCI application.
After logging in, open your dashboard and click on the e-OCI section.
Check your OCI application details carefully.
Click on “Generate e-OCI Card” in the Action column.
Once the card is generated, download it and save it on your smartphone or cloud storage for easy access whenever required.
The digital card can be shown during identity verification at airports and other authorised checkpoints.
Major Benefits of the e-OCI Card
The new digital card offers several advantages for OCI cardholders.
One of the biggest changes is that OCI holders will no longer need to get a new physical OCI booklet every time they receive a new passport after the age-related renewal requirement.
Instead, they can simply update their passport details online through the OCI portal.
The digital format also reduces the risk of losing or damaging the physical booklet and allows for quicker verification during travel.
Is the Physical OCI Card Still Valid?
Yes. The government has clarified that all existing physical OCI booklets will remain valid until their expiry or as per the applicable rules.
OCI cardholders do not need to surrender their physical booklet to receive the digital version. Both can be used according to the government’s guidelines.
Should You Carry the Physical OCI Card While Travelling?
Although the e-OCI card makes travel more convenient, experts advise carrying the physical OCI booklet for now, especially during international trips.
Since airlines and immigration authorities in different countries may take some time to fully adopt India’s new digital verification system, carrying both the physical and digital versions can help avoid inconvenience during travel.
