Can you travel on another Train with the Same Ticket? Know the Railway Rules

New Delhi:

Indian Railways is often referred to as the lifeline of the country, providing vital connectivity across its vast expanse.

Understanding the rules and regulations regarding missed trains and ticket refunds can help passengers navigate unexpected situations more smoothly.

Here’s what you need to know if you miss your train.

Traveling on Another Train with the Same Ticket

According to Indian Railways rules, if you have a general coach ticket, you can travel by another train. However, the type of train matters.

For instance, you can’t use a general ticket to board premium services like Vande Bharat, Superfast, or Rajdhani Express without appropriate adjustments.

If you have a reserved ticket, the rules are stricter. A reserved ticket cannot be used for travel on another train.

Attempting to do so could result in a fine if you are caught traveling without a valid ticket.

Applying for a Refund on IRCTC If You Miss a Train

If you miss your train, you can apply for a refund through the IRCTC app by filing a Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR).

  1. Log in to the IRCTC App: Use your credentials to log in.
  2. Access TDR Filing: Click on the ‘Train’ option and then select ‘File TDR’.
  3. Select Your Ticket: Find and select the ticket for which you want to file TDR.
  4. File TDR: Choose the reason for filing TDR and submit. The TDR will be filed, and you should receive your refund within 60 days.

Above is the full process.

Refunds on Ticket Cancellation

48 to 12 Hours Before Departure

If you cancel a confirmed ticket between 48 hours and 12 hours before the scheduled departure, 25% of the ticket amount will be deducted.

4 to 12 Hours Before Departure

Cancelling the ticket between 4 hours and 12 hours before departure will result in a 50% deduction.

Waitlist and RAC Tickets

These must be canceled at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure; otherwise, no refund will be issued.

By understanding these rules, passengers can better manage their travel plans and minimize the inconvenience caused by missed trains.

Always check the latest updates and policies from Indian Railways to stay informed about any changes in these rules.
