Australia Student Visa Rules are changing as the government introduces tighter migration measures for international students.
Most new international students will no longer be able to bring their partners and dependent children with them to Australia, with limited exceptions for some Pacific and Southeast Asian countries.
The changes were announced by Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke on Thursday, September 17, as part of a wider plan to manage migration and reduce visa hopping. The government is targeting net overseas migration of 225,000 in 2027-28.
Australia Student Visa Rules Get Stricter
Under the new policy, secondary applicants on most student visas will be restricted.
This means international students will generally not be able to bring their spouse, partner or dependent children to Australia while studying, subject to the stated exceptions.
The Australian government has also announced measures to stop visa hopping. A new No Further Stay condition will be used in relevant cases to prevent people from using one temporary visa as a pathway to another visa while remaining in Australia.
What Were the Earlier Rules?
Under the previous arrangements, eligible international students could include family members in their student visa arrangements. Partners of students could also have work rights, subject to the conditions attached to their visa.
The latest changes are therefore particularly relevant for students planning to move to Australia with their spouse or children. The exact application of the new rules will depend on the visa type and any applicable exceptions.
Australia Plans to Reduce Migration
The student visa changes are part of a broader migration policy announced by the Australian government.
Official figures showed net overseas migration had fallen to 301,000 in the year to December 2025, down more than 45% from the post-COVID peak recorded in 2023.
The government says the next stage of policy changes is aimed at meeting net overseas migration forecasts of 245,000 in the current financial year and 225,000 in 2027-28.
The measures also include stronger compliance checks and changes to the Working Holiday Maker programme.

Indian students planning to study in Australia will need to consider the new family restrictions when making their study and visa plans.
Students who were expecting to take their spouse or children with them may need to check whether their case falls under an exception.
The Australian government has been tightening migration settings since the post-pandemic increase in arrivals.
International student numbers have also been declining, with official data showing student-related net overseas migration down 10% over the year to June 2026.
