Audi Electric Vehicle Lineup to Get Affordable with Local Assembly

Audi, the renowned German luxury car manufacturer, is gearing up to make its electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible to Indian consumers with a significant announcement.

The company is considering initiating local assembly of its electric vehicles in India, a move that could potentially lead to reduced prices and an expanded customer base.

Current Status

At present, Audi’s electric vehicle range in India comprises imported models such as the Q8 50 e-tron, Q8 55 e-tron, Q8 Sportback 50 e-tron, Q8 Sportback 55 e-tron, e-tron GT, and RS e-tron GT.

However, the company is now shifting its focus towards assembling these cars locally in India.

Localization Efforts

While Audi’s petrol versions of Q3, Q3 Sportback, Q5, Q7, A4, and A6 are already assembled in India at the plant located in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, the company is now emphasizing the need for localizing the assembly of EVs.

Progress and Discussions

Balbir Singh Dhillon, Audi India chief, revealed that active discussions are underway with the company’s global headquarters regarding the initiation of local manufacturing for EVs.

Although no specific timeline has been provided, Dhillon expressed optimism about reaching a favorable outcome and announcing the commencement of local assembling for EV models in the near future.

Future Plans

Audi has ambitious plans to launch multiple electric models globally within the next 2-3 years, with some of these models also slated for introduction in the Indian market.

Currently, the EV segment accounts for 2% of the company’s sales, with notable growth observed in recent years.

In 2022, Audi recorded sales of 4,187 EV units, which surged to 7,931 units in December 2023, marking an impressive growth of 89%.

As Audi progresses towards local assembly of electric vehicles in India, consumers can anticipate more affordable pricing and a wider selection of EV options in the Indian automotive market.
