Relief for Indians: H-1B Visa Renewal Can Now Be Done Without Leaving America

In a significant development, a new pilot project has been initiated to simplify the H-1B visa renewal process, bringing relief to Indians residing in the USA and other countries.

This initiative allows applicants to apply for visa renewal without the need to leave the United States.

Online Application Drive Opens for Trial Period

The special renewal drive, launched on a five-week trial basis, allows an initial 20,000 applicants to apply for H-1B visa renewal without leaving the US.

The US State Department website, designated for the pilot project, will start accepting applications after February 5, 2024.

Rules and Guidelines for Application

The State Department has outlined specific rules for the renewal process.

Applicants must currently be in the US, and leaving the country during this period is not permitted.

The total number of applicants will be evenly distributed between those seeking H-1B visas at the Indian and Canadian Consulates.

Historic Shift in Renewal Process

This new pilot project marks a significant departure from the traditional H-1B visa renewal process,

which required individuals to stay out of the US for one year after the visa’s expiry.

This change comes after nearly two decades,

addressing the challenges faced by a substantial number of Indian professionals living in the US on H-1B visas.

Statistics Highlight Indian Dominance in H-1B Visas

Out of the total 4.41 lakh H-1B visas issued in 2022, approximately 72.6 percent, translating to 3.2 lakh visas, were granted to Indian nationals,

as reported by USIC (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services).
