Aadhaar gets 5 new updates as the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced new initiatives covering face authentication, digital approvals, authentication infrastructure, office visits and its online portal.

The announcements were made at Aadhaar Samvaad in Kolkata on September 29, 2026.

The five initiatives are aimed at expanding Aadhaar authentication options, improving access to UIDAI services and making digital services easier for residents and eligible entities to use.

Aadhaar Gets 5 New Updates

The first initiative is Face Authentication for the Electronic Public Distribution System (ePDS).

UIDAI, the Department of Food and Public Distribution and the National Informatics Centre have introduced the contactless, consent-based option as an additional way for beneficiaries to authenticate themselves.

The face-based option can be particularly useful when fingerprint authentication is difficult. States and Union Territories can integrate the facility into their respective ePDS systems.

The second initiative is SWIK Portal 2.0. It is designed to simplify the process of seeking approval for Aadhaar authentication under the Aadhaar Authentication for Good Governance framework.

Eligible non-government entities can submit proposals for permitted use cases through the portal to the concerned ministry or department.

New Aadhaar Authentication Framework Introduced

The third initiative is the Sub-AUA/Sub-KUA (LITE) Framework.

It is intended for government and eligible other-than-government entities that have low-volume authentication requirements.

Under this framework, eligible entities can use the authentication infrastructure of an existing AUA or KUA instead of establishing their own infrastructure.

UIDAI said the approach is intended to support simpler and faster onboarding while maintaining security, privacy and regulatory requirements.

The fourth initiative is a new Token Management System. UIDAI said the system is intended to make visits to its state and regional offices easier for residents wherever such visits are required for services.

Revamped UIDAI Website Brings New Features

The fifth initiative is the revamped UIDAI website.

The redesigned portal has been structured around four common user needs: understanding Aadhaar, accessing services, finding documents and seeking assistance.

The new website includes accessibility features such as screen-reader compatibility, adjustable font sizes, improved colour contrast and keyboard navigation.

It also uses BHASHINI integration and currently supports 13 languages, including English and Hindi. UIDAI said it plans to expand the website to 23 languages in the near future.

The revamped website also includes a UIDAI Career Portal through which users can apply online for deputation opportunities.

What the New Aadhaar Changes Mean

The five initiatives announced by UIDAI cover different parts of the Aadhaar ecosystem, from authentication and approval processes to office visits and online services.

Face authentication provides an additional authentication option, while the new framework is intended to help eligible entities with low-volume requirements use existing authentication infrastructure.

The revamped website and token management system focus on access to UIDAI services, while SWIK Portal 2.0 is aimed at making the approval process for eligible Aadhaar authentication use cases more streamlined.
