Malaysia visa-free entry is meant for tourism and social visits, not for seeking employment, the Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has warned Indian citizens.
The advisory comes amid reports of Indians travelling to Malaysia after being promised jobs by fake agents.
The High Commission issued the warning on the social media platform X, saying there has been a significant increase in Indian nationals reaching Malaysia through the 30-day visa-free facility to look for work.
Malaysia Visa-Free Entry Cannot Be Used for Jobs
The High Commission clarified that the 30-day visa-free facility is available for tourism and social visits, including travel and meeting relatives. It does not permit employment or job-related activities in Malaysia.
Indian citizens have been advised not to travel to Malaysia to seek employment under the visa-free facility. Those planning to work in the country must have the required employment authorisation.
Fake Job Offers Can Lead to Legal Trouble
According to the advisory, several Indian nationals have reportedly fallen victim to fraudulent agents offering false job opportunities in Malaysia.
Such cases can result in overstaying, illegal immigration status, exploitation and legal action, including detention. The High Commission warned that using the visa-free facility for employment purposes violates Malaysian immigration rules.
The warning is aimed at helping Indian travellers avoid fraudulent job offers and understand the restrictions attached to the visa-free entry facility before travelling.
Documents Genuine Tourists Should Carry
The High Commission has advised genuine tourists to carry the necessary and verified documents to avoid immigration-related difficulties when entering Malaysia.
Travellers should have a confirmed return ticket, proof of hotel booking and a completed Malaysia Digital Arrival Card. The arrival card needs to be completed three days before the planned arrival in Malaysia.
Travellers should also carry a passport with at least six months of validity.
Work Visa Required for Employment in Malaysia
The Indian High Commission has strongly advised citizens not to travel to Malaysia for employment without the required work authorisation.
Those travelling for work should have a valid Work Permit or Visa with Reference before entering Malaysia. The advisory makes clear that tourists cannot use the 30-day visa-free facility as a route to find or start employment in the country.
