September is bringing several important deadlines and rule changes that could affect your tax filing, LPG connection, travel plans and investments.
Some changes will take effect from September 1, while others have deadlines just before the month begins.
So, if you have not completed certain financial or verification-related tasks yet, August 31 is an important date to remember.
Here are the key changes you should know about.
ITR Filing Deadline: Who Needs to File by August 31?
Taxpayers earning income from a business or profession whose accounts do not need to be audited generally have to file their income tax return for Assessment Year 2026-27 by August 31.
If you fall into this category and haven’t filed your return yet, don’t wait until September 1.
The ITR form you need depends on your income and circumstances.
ITR-4 (Sugam) can be used by eligible taxpayers who choose the presumptive taxation scheme and meet the required conditions and income limits.
ITR-3 is generally used by individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who have business or professional income but are not eligible to use ITR-4.
This can include taxpayers whose income or business activities require more detailed reporting, including certain eligible cases involving futures and options (F&O) trading.
International Flyers Won’t Get Boarding Passes Stamped
If you’re flying abroad from India, there is another change coming from September 1.
The Bureau of Immigration is discontinuing the practice of stamping boarding passes during immigration clearance.
Passengers can show their electronic boarding pass on their mobile phone at immigration.
If you have a physical boarding pass, you can still use it. However, immigration officials will no longer stamp it.
The move is aimed at making immigration clearance faster and reducing the hassle of carrying a stamped boarding pass.
So, if you’re travelling internationally, make sure your e-boarding pass is easily accessible on your phone.
LPG e-KYC Deadline: Complete It by August 31
LPG consumers have another important deadline to remember.
The deadline for completing Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC for domestic LPG connections has been extended to August 31, 2026.
If you haven’t completed the verification yet, it is better to finish it before the deadline.
Failing to complete the required process could potentially affect access to certain LPG services or applicable benefits.
Oil marketing companies, including Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum, have been asking customers to complete the verification process.
Remember, the deadline is August 31, not September 1.
FD Rule Change Is Coming, But Not From September 1
Fixed deposit investors should also know about an upcoming change.
However, this rule does not start on September 1.
The RBI’s revised bank deposit framework is scheduled to come into effect from October 1, 2026.
Under the new framework, banks will have to provide more information about bulk deposit interest rates.
For bulk deposits of ₹3 crore and above, banks will have to display the applicable interest rates on their websites every business day.
Banks will also have to offer the same rate for the same deposit amount on the same day across their branches, although they can maintain different rates for different bulk-deposit slabs.
For most ordinary FD investors, there may not be any immediate impact.
The bigger benefit is expected to be greater transparency in the way banks price large deposits.
LPG and Other Prices May Also Change
September 1 is also when several prices and charges can undergo their regular monthly revisions.
These may include LPG cylinder prices and aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices, depending on decisions taken by the relevant companies and authorities.
Banks and other financial institutions may also revise certain charges periodically.
For households, it is worth checking the latest LPG price in your city when September begins.
ATF price changes can also affect the aviation industry. However, a change in ATF prices does not automatically mean that air ticket prices will rise or fall by the same amount.
Key Dates to Remember
The beginning of September is therefore more important than it may initially appear.
Keep these dates in mind:
August 31: ITR filing deadline for applicable taxpayers with business/professional income
August 31: Deadline for Aadhaar-based LPG e-KYC
September 1: Boarding pass stamping discontinued during immigration for international travel from India
October 1: Revised RBI deposit rules come into effect
If any of these apply to you, completing the required task before the deadline can help you avoid last-minute problems.
