Receiving calls from unknown numbers can often leave people wondering whether the call is genuine or a potential scam.
To make legitimate service calls easier to recognise, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has started the phase-wise rollout of the 1601 numbering series.
The new number series will be used for service and transaction-related voice calls from eligible businesses outside sectors such as banking, financial services, insurance and government.
The initial rollout focuses on sectors including utilities, courier and logistics.
Why Is TRAI Introducing the 1601 Series?
Fraudsters often use ordinary 10-digit mobile numbers to pretend to be delivery companies, utility providers or other businesses.
At the same time, genuine service calls from unknown numbers can also be ignored because consumers cannot easily tell who is calling.
The dedicated 1601 series is intended to create a clearer distinction between legitimate service calls and ordinary commercial or suspicious calls.
The broader 160 numbering system was introduced by the Department of Telecommunications to help consumers identify genuine service and transaction-related communications.
1601 Numbers Cannot Be Used for Promotions
There is an important restriction on the new number series.
Companies using 1601 numbers cannot use them for promotional calls or to sell additional products and services.
These numbers are specifically meant for permitted service and transactional communications.
Telecom operators will verify businesses before allocating numbers from the series.
Companies will also have to provide an undertaking confirming that the numbers will be used only for approved purposes.
Only Verified Businesses Can Get 1601 Numbers
Telecom service providers will be responsible for carrying out due diligence before assigning 1601 numbers to businesses.
The number resources will also be distributed in a controlled manner.
Initially, each telecom service provider in each licensed service area can receive a block of 1,000 numbers.
Additional blocks can be provided only after at least 75% of the existing numbers have been used.
This is designed to prevent the numbering series from being distributed without proper control.
What Will Change for Consumers?
For consumers, the biggest benefit could be easier identification of genuine service calls.
If you receive a call from a verified 1601 number, it may indicate that the call is connected to an existing service or transaction rather than a promotional offer.
For example, calls related to utilities, deliveries or logistics could increasingly appear through this dedicated numbering system.
However, consumers should not assume that every call is automatically safe.
You should still avoid sharing OTPs, passwords, banking details or other sensitive information over a phone call unless you are certain about the caller and the purpose of the call.
The 1601 series is designed to improve identification and reduce misuse of regular numbers, but it does not completely eliminate the risk of fraud.
Part of India’s Fight Against Spam Calls
The rollout is part of India’s wider effort to tackle spam and fraudulent communications.
The government and telecom authorities have been working to create different numbering systems for different types of commercial communication.
With utilities, courier companies and logistics businesses now being brought under the 1601 system, consumers may gradually start seeing more calls from this number series.
1601 Could Soon Become Familiar to Consumers
The success of the new system will depend on how widely eligible businesses adopt it and how effectively telecom operators verify and monitor its use.
If adoption increases, consumers could find it easier to recognise calls related to services they actually use.
For now, the 1601 rollout is another step toward making India’s growing digital communication system more transparent and helping consumers distinguish legitimate service calls from unwanted or suspicious calls.
