The last date to file your Income Tax Return (ITR) for AY 2026 is July 31, 2026. As the deadline approaches, millions of taxpayers are busy collecting documents and filing their returns on time.

But did you know that there is one Indian state where eligible residents do not have to pay income tax? This is not a government scheme or a temporary benefit. It is a legal tax exemption provided under the Income Tax Act.

Sikkim Residents Get a Special Income Tax Exemption

The state is Sikkim. Eligible native residents of Sikkim receive a special income tax exemption under Section 10(26AAA) of the Income Tax Act.

Under this provision, eligible Sikkimese residents do not have to pay income tax on income earned within the state. In certain cases, they also receive tax exemption on dividend and interest income.

Who Can Claim This Tax Benefit?

Not everyone living or working in Sikkim can claim this exemption.

The benefit is available only to people who meet the legal definition of a resident of Sikkim under the law. Simply moving to the state, working there, or running a business does not make a person eligible for this tax exemption.

Only those who qualify under the prescribed legal conditions can enjoy this special benefit.

Why Does Sikkim Have This Special Rule?

Sikkim became the 22nd state of India in 1975. At the time of its merger with India, Article 371F of the Constitution introduced special provisions to protect the state’s historical, cultural, and legal identity.

As part of these constitutional safeguards, eligible native residents of Sikkim were granted this income tax exemption. The provision continues to protect the rights promised during Sikkim’s accession to India.

Don’t Miss the ITR Filing Deadline

Taxpayers in the rest of India must continue to follow the normal income tax rules. Their tax liability depends on their total income, the tax regime they choose, and the deductions or exemptions available to them.

If you have not filed your ITR yet, it is better to complete the process before July 31, 2026. Filing your return on time can help you avoid late fees, interest charges, and unnecessary complications.
