If you retired from the Indian Railways on June 30 or are about to retire, there is good news for you.
The Railway Board has taken an important step to speed up the process of giving eligible retirees the benefit of a notional increment.
This decision could lead to a higher monthly pension for many pensioners. Eligible retirees may also receive pending arrears that were delayed earlier.
Railway Board Issues New Order
On July 16, 2026, the Railway Board directed all zonal railways and production units to quickly clear pending cases related to notional increments.
The main aim of this order is to ensure that eligible retirees receive their pension benefits without unnecessary delays.
It will also reduce the need for pensioners to make repeated visits to railway offices or approach the courts.
What Is a Notional Increment?
Railway employees receive their annual salary increment on July 1 every year.
However, employees who retired on June 30 missed out on this increment because they were no longer officially in service on July 1.
Even though they had completed a full year of service, they did not receive the additional increment. As a result, their pension and retirement benefits were lower.
The Supreme Court later ruled in favor of these employees.
Based on the court’s decision and the Central Government’s guidelines, the Railways has now decided to extend the July 1 notional increment benefit to eligible employees who retired on June 30.
Benefits Eligible Pensioners Will Receive
Eligible retired railway employees can expect several benefits, including:
An increase in their monthly pension.
A revised Pension Payment Order (PPO).
Payment of pending pension arrears along with the revised pension.
The arrears will be credited to beneficiaries’ bank accounts in phases.
Instructions Given to Railway Officials
The Railway Board has instructed officials to prepare the list of eligible retirees as soon as possible and clear all pending cases without delay.
Officials have also been asked to complete the process within the prescribed timeline so that pensioners do not face unnecessary difficulties.
Timely settlement of these cases is also expected to reduce pension-related disputes and court cases.
