After filing your Income Tax Return (ITR), the next question most taxpayers have is, “When will I get my refund?” The good news is that you can easily check your refund status online without visiting the Income Tax Department.
The Income Tax Department offers simple digital services that allow taxpayers to track their refund in just a few minutes.
What Is an ITR Refund?
An ITR refund is the amount returned by the government if you have paid more tax than required during the financial year.
This extra tax may have been deducted as TDS, advance tax, or self-assessment tax.
However, you will receive the refund only after filing your Income Tax Return and successfully verifying it.
How to Check Your ITR Refund Status
The easiest way to check your refund is through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal.
Follow these simple steps:
Log in to the Income Tax e-filing portal.
Go to the e-File section.
Select Income Tax Returns.
Click on View Filed Returns.
You will be able to see the status of your filed return as well as your refund.
You Can Also Check Through the NSDL (Protean) Portal
If you don’t want to log in to the e-filing portal, you can also check your refund status through the NSDL (Protean) portal.
Simply:
Visit the portal.
Enter your PAN and Assessment Year.
Fill in the captcha code.
Click Proceed to view your refund status.
When Will the ITR Refund Be Credited?
In most cases, refunds are processed within a few weeks after your ITR is successfully verified.
However, the exact time may vary from one taxpayer to another.
Your refund may be delayed if:
Your bank account or IFSC details are incorrect.
Your ITR has not been verified.
There is a mismatch in the information provided in your return, AIS, or Form 26AS.
Important Things to Remember
To receive your refund without delays, make sure you complete these steps:
Verify your ITR after filing it.
Ensure your bank account details and IFSC code are correct.
Check that the information in your return matches your AIS and Form 26AS.
Don’t Miss the ITR Filing Deadline

Filing your return on time not only helps you avoid penalties but also improves the chances of receiving your refund sooner.
