What Is Changing?
At present, most international students in the US are admitted under a system called “Duration of Status” (D/S).
This allows students to remain in the country as long as they continue their approved academic program and maintain their visa requirements.
Under the proposed rule, this system would be replaced with a fixed admission period of up to four years.
After that period, students who need more time would have to apply for an extension and undergo additional review by US authorities.
How Could This Affect Students?
The biggest impact would be increased paperwork and more frequent immigration checks.
Students enrolled in long academic programs, research projects or combined degree courses may need to apply for extensions if their studies continue beyond the approved period.

Why Does the US Government Want This Change?

International Student Numbers Are Already Falling
The debate comes at a time when international student enrollment in the US has already declined.
Recent reports show that foreign student enrollment for the Spring 2026 semester fell significantly compared to the previous year.
Data presented in the Indian Parliament also showed a decline in the number of Indian students studying in the US.
The number dropped from 378,787 in February 2025 to 352,644 in February 2026.
Many education experts worry that stricter visa policies could further discourage students from choosing the United States for higher education.

International students contribute billions of dollars to the US economy every year.
Their spending includes tuition fees, accommodation, healthcare, transportation and daily living expenses.
According to recent estimates, international students contributed nearly $43 billion to the US economy during the 2024-25 academic year and supported more than 355,000 jobs.
