Important news for Indians planning to work in New Zealand. The New Zealand government has announced a new English language rule for workers applying under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
Starting next month, more workers will need to prove their basic English skills before getting a job visa. The new rule will now apply to jobs listed under “Skill Level 3” in the ANZSCO and National Occupation Lists.
Earlier, this requirement was mainly for lower-skilled jobs under Levels 4 and 5. Now, the government has expanded the rule to cover more skilled workers as well.
Basic English Now Mandatory for Many Jobs
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said that Skill Level 3 workers form the largest group under the AEWV system.
According to her, basic English knowledge helps workers understand their rights and adjust better to workplaces and local communities.
For these jobs, workers will need an IELTS score of 4.0 or an equivalent English qualification. This level is considered basic and focuses mainly on everyday communication rather than advanced English skills.
The minister also clarified that this rule will not apply to seasonal visa holders.
Why Has New Zealand Introduced This Rule?
The government says many industries in New Zealand currently face worker shortages, especially in skilled trades.
Because companies urgently need staff, many workers are being hired even if they have very limited English skills. While this helps businesses continue operations, it creates problems later when workers struggle to communicate or settle into society.
The government believes that even a basic level of English can make daily life easier for workers and help them integrate better into the community.
This change is also important for people who want to settle permanently in New Zealand in the future.
What is Skill Level 3?
ANZSCO is the official job classification system used by the New Zealand government. It explains the education, skills, and work experience needed for different jobs.
Skill Level 3 usually includes jobs that require:
A Certificate IV or Diploma
Or at least two years of relevant work experience
These jobs are considered skilled roles and often need technical knowledge or specialized training.
Jobs Included Under Skill Level 3
Several popular jobs fall under this category, including:
Trades and Technical Jobs
Electrician
Carpenter
Plumber
Motor mechanic
Healthcare Support Jobs
Nursing assistant
Dental assistant
Ambulance attendant
IT and Technical Roles
IT support technician
Software support roles
Hardware-related jobs
Other Skilled Jobs

Supervisory and administrative positions
What This Means for Indian Workers
This new rule will directly affect Indian workers planning to move to New Zealand for Skill Level 3 jobs.
Now, applicants must also show proof of basic English ability while applying for jobs and visas.
Although getting an IELTS band score of 4.0 is generally considered easy, it still adds another step to the immigration process.
For many Indian workers, especially those in technical and trade professions, preparing for the English test will now become an important part of planning a job opportunity in New Zealand.
