People who use Instagram for chatting may need to rethink their privacy settings. Meta has reportedly stopped end-to-end encryption (E2EE) support for Instagram messages from May 8.

This means the platform may now be able to access message content when required.

Earlier, end-to-end encryption helped keep chats private by allowing only the sender and receiver to read messages. With this change, many users are now searching for safer messaging apps that offer stronger privacy protection.

Here’s a look at some popular apps that still provide end-to-end encrypted messaging.

WhatsApp Still Offers Encrypted Chats

Even though Instagram has reportedly removed E2EE support, Meta’s other messaging platform, WhatsApp, still provides end-to-end encryption for chats and calls.

According to the company, all personal messages on WhatsApp are encrypted, meaning no third party can read them. However, some public figures, including Elon Musk, have raised questions about WhatsApp’s privacy policies in the past.

Still, WhatsApp remains one of the most widely used secure messaging apps in the world.

XChat and Session Focus on Privacy

XChat, launched by Elon Musk’s platform X, also supports end-to-end encryption. The service recently launched a dedicated iOS app and can also be accessed through the X platform.

The company says XChat does not use ads or tracking for messages. Users also get features like editing and deleting messages.

Another strong privacy-focused option is Session. This app does not require a mobile number for creating an account, which adds another layer of anonymity.

Session also claims that it does not store metadata, making it much harder to track users or conversations.

Signal Remains a Trusted Choice

Signal is considered one of the most trusted apps for private communication.

Its encryption system is similar to WhatsApp’s, but Signal is known for collecting very little user data. All chats and calls are encrypted, and the platform does not use personal information for advertising purposes.

Many privacy experts and users prefer Signal because of its strong focus on security.

Telegram Offers Secret Chats

Telegram is another popular messaging app for private conversations.

Normal Telegram chats use standard encryption. However, users can enable the “Secret Chat” feature to get end-to-end encrypted messaging.
