India’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector has received big news. OpenAI announced that it will open new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru in 2026.
This announcement was made during the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in Delhi. At the same event, the company also introduced a new initiative called “OpenAI for India.”
Currently, OpenAI operates in India from New Delhi, but the company says that India has become a very important market. More than 100 million people use ChatGPT in India every week.
Opening offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru will allow OpenAI to work directly with startups, large companies, developers, and colleges across different cities.
Key Announcements from the Summit
At the summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that India is quickly adopting AI. He explained that OpenAI’s goal is to build strong infrastructure
and partnerships in India to accelerate the development of new AI technologies and solutions.
While the company hasn’t shared the exact month in 2026 when the offices will open or the number of jobs, it confirmed that OpenAI plans to stay in India long-term.
Partnership with Tata Group
OpenAI also announced a partnership with the Tata Group. This will create AI-ready data centers in India. OpenAI will be the first customer of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) HyperVault data center.
The initial capacity will be 100 megawatts, which could grow to 1 gigawatt over time.
This partnership will allow OpenAI’s models to be used securely within India, keeping data in the country and helping comply with local regulations.
TCS will also roll out ChatGPT Enterprise to its employees in the coming years, with TCS staff being the first users. Additionally, TCS will use OpenAI’s Codex tools to develop software.
Expanding into Education
OpenAI is also entering the education sector in India. The company will start its certification programs, with TCS being the first group outside the U.S.
to participate. OpenAI has also partnered with top institutions like Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIMA) and All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
