PhonePe, the Flipkart-owned UPI platform, announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI on Thursday.
The collaboration will integrate OpenAI’s artificial intelligence (AI) technology into PhonePe’s platform to enhance the user experience and help users make more informed decisions while shopping.
This is not the first time a payments company has teamed up with OpenAI.
In October, Razorpay partnered with OpenAI and NPCI to enable agentic AI-based UPI transactions through ChatGPT.
What the Partnership Means for Users
According to PhonePe, ChatGPT’s AI capabilities will be embedded across its platform to assist users in various operations.
While the full chatbot interface will not appear in the PhonePe Consumer App or PhonePe for Business App, users will experience ChatGPT-powered features.
These features aim to help users find accurate information for everyday needs, such as planning trips or making purchase decisions.
This integration is expected to make the platform more intuitive and helpful for all users.
OpenAI’s Focus on India
PhonePe’s collaboration with OpenAI will also give the AI company access to PhonePe’s large user base and ecosystem, including the Indus Appstore.
Financial details of the deal were not disclosed.
Oliver Jay, Head of International at OpenAI, said, “Our collaboration with PhonePe is an important milestone in our mission to make AI more accessible in India.
PhonePe’s deep understanding of the country and its large user base make it an ideal partner.”
OpenAI has been actively focusing on India, including:
Opening its first physical office in the country
Investing in a 1GW data center
Partnering with Razorpay and NPCI for AI-powered UPI payments
Making ChatGPT Go subscriptions free in India for the next 12 months
This partnership highlights OpenAI’s commitment to making AI tools more accessible and practical for Indian users.
