Apple has started rolling out iOS 26.1, the first major update to its iOS 26 operating system.
Released just over a month after the original version, the update brings interface improvements, accessibility upgrades, and wider language support for Apple Intelligence and AirPods Live Translation.
Who Can Install iOS 26.1 and How
The iOS 26.1 update is available for the iPhone 11 series and newer models, along with the second-generation iPhone SE.
Eligible users can install it over the air by going to:
Settings → General → Software Update.
What’s New in iOS 26.1
New Liquid Glass Option and Interface Updates
One of the biggest additions is the Liquid Glass opacity control, which lets users adjust the tint of the translucent material seen in apps and notifications on the Lock Screen.
This feature helps users who prefer less transparency.
Apple has also changed how Alarms and Timers work — they now require a swipe gesture to dismiss, reducing accidental touches.
Additionally, iPhone owners can now disable the Lock Screen Camera swipe, a long-awaited privacy option.
Expanded Apple Intelligence and AirPods Features
AirPods Live Translation now supports more languages, including Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Japanese, Korean, and Italian, making real-time translation easier for global users.
Apple Intelligence, the company’s AI-based toolset, is also expanding to more regions and languages with this update.
Improvements in Core Apps
In the Music app, Apple has added a MiniPlayer swipe gesture to switch tracks quickly and AutoMix support over AirPlay for smoother audio transitions.
For recording, users can now adjust gain levels when using external USB microphones and choose specific storage locations for saved recordings.
The Fitness app now allows users to log workouts manually, offering flexibility for those who don’t use a paired device.
Other Enhancements and Child Safety Updates
FaceTime now delivers better audio quality in areas with low internet bandwidth.
Meanwhile, Communication Safety and web content filters are automatically enabled for existing child accounts (ages 13–17), though availability may vary by region.
Performance and Availability
Apple mentions that installing iOS 26.1 could affect performance and battery life, depending on device and usage.
Some features might not be available in all regions or on every iPhone model.
