Reliance Jio is once again transforming the telecom industry.
This time, Jio has launched Voice Over New Radio (VoNR) service across India.
You can think of VoNR as an upgraded version of VoLTE, designed to work entirely on Jio’s own 5G network, which was first rolled out in October 2022 with help from companies like Ericsson and Nokia.
With VoNR, users can now make high-quality voice calls directly over 5G, without falling back on older 4G networks.
This means you’ll get crystal-clear voice quality along with fast 5G internet access at the same time.
What is VoNR and How Is It Better Than VoLTE?
According to Jio Vice President Ayush Bhatnagar, VoNR is a 5G-based voice calling service developed using Jio’s in-house technology.
Unlike VoLTE, which uses the 4G LTE network for calls, VoNR runs entirely on the 5G network. Here’s how it improves your calling experience:
No more switching to 4G for calls – it’s all on 5G.
Instant call connection – faster than VoLTE.
Clearer voice quality – sounds like you’re in a recording studio.
Fewer call drops and better call stability.
Lower battery usage due to the efficient 5G network.
Once VoNR is activated on your phone, you’ll see “Vo5G” or “VoNR” next to the signal bars, replacing the usual VoLTE symbol.
What You Need to Use Jio’s VoNR
To use the VoNR service, make sure you meet these basic requirements:
You must have a 5G-enabled smartphone.
A Jio SIM card should be inserted in the phone.
Your Jio SIM must have an active recharge plan.
You must be in an area with Jio 5G network coverage.
Without any of these, the VoNR feature will not work.
How to Turn On VoNR on Your Phone
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to enable VoNR:
Open Settings on your phone.
Go to Mobile Network or SIM Settings.
Select the Jio SIM.
Look for the VoNR option (it might be off by default).
Toggle it ON.
Your internet may pause briefly, and then Vo5G or VoNR will appear near the signal icon.
If you don’t see it immediately, restart your phone.
Once done, you’ll be able to experience HD voice calls and high-speed 5G at the same time.
