YouTube is making significant updates to its Shorts feature. Starting October 15, the video limit for Shorts will increase from one minute to three minutes.
This change applies to Shorts made in square or taller aspect ratios. However, it will not affect videos shot before this date.
More Opportunities for Creators
This update allows creators to express their ideas more fully and connect better with their audience. With longer Shorts, users can share their stories in a more detailed way.
YouTube is also introducing new features. There will be a preview of comments in the Shorts feed, making it easier for users to engage with each other.
Additionally, users will soon be able to create Remix Clips.
This feature lets them drag different YouTube clips into the Shorts camera, enabling them to strip audio, use videos as backgrounds, or cut and combine clips for their Shorts.
New Tools for a Better Experience
A new tool will also let users see fewer Shorts, which can be accessed via the three-dot menu in the upper right corner.
Many creators have been eagerly waiting for the increase in video duration, and YouTube’s decision is seen as a welcome change.
As YouTube makes these updates, it will be interesting to see how Meta responds with Instagram Reels, its biggest competitor in India.
Currently, Instagram users can post videos up to 90 seconds (1.5 minutes). It remains to be seen if Meta will extend the time limit for Reels as well.
