US Tariff Relief for Indian Medicines has come as an important development for the Indian pharmaceutical sector.
The US has decided not to impose percentage-based tariffs on certain medicines and essential pharmaceutical ingredients imported from 20 countries, including India.
The move comes as the US prepares to impose a 100% tariff on certain patented medicines and related pharmaceutical products from September 29.

The US Commerce Department has published a list of countries in the Federal Register whose eligible medicines will receive a 0% tariff under the specified categories.
Besides India, the list includes Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ecuador, the European Union, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Vietnam, among other countries.
The exemption is significant because the US is also moving ahead with higher tariffs on certain patented pharmaceutical products.
Which Medicines Get 0% Tariff
The US has specified several categories of medicines that are eligible for zero tariffs. These include medicines used for rare diseases and infertility treatments.
The exemption also covers cell therapy, gene therapy and antibody-drug conjugates, commonly known as ADCs. Certain components used in these medicines will also qualify for the 0% tariff.
Some veterinary medicines are also included in the exemption.
This means companies exporting the designated products to the US would not face the newly proposed tariffs on those eligible products.
Why It Matters for Indian Pharma
India is one of the world’s major producers of generic medicines, while the US remains an important market for Indian pharmaceutical companies.
The US Department of Commerce has clarified that the pharmaceutical tariffs under Section 232 will not apply to generic drugs and essential ingredients under the specified arrangements.
The exemption applies to products originating from countries that have existing or proposed trade and security agreements with the US, according to the US announcement.
US Tariff Policy for Pharma
The latest decision comes after a proclamation issued by US President Donald Trump on April 2 that sought to encourage greater domestic production of patented medicines and pharmaceutical ingredients.
The 0% tariff treatment for specified products from eligible countries therefore provides a separate exemption from the broader tariff measures.
The exact impact on individual Indian pharmaceutical companies will depend on the products they export and whether those products meet the conditions specified under the US tariff rules.
