If you use UPI regularly, there’s an important update for you. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced new rules that will come into effect from April 1, 2025.
Under these rules, banks will delete mobile numbers that are inactive or reissued to another user.
This step is aimed at preventing incorrect transactions and making UPI payments more secure.
Why Are These New Rules Being Introduced?
In an NPCI meeting on July 16, 2024, it was decided that banks and payment service providers (PSPs) must regularly update their systems.
Now, banks and UPI apps will refresh the list of mobile numbers every week to reduce failed or incorrect transactions.
What Should UPI Users Know?
UPI apps will now ask for your consent before updating your mobile number.
You will get a clear option in the app to approve the update.
No misleading or forced consent messages will appear.
If you do not update your number, you may not be able to receive UPI payments.
New Rules for Banks and UPI Apps
By March 31, 2025, all banks and UPI service providers must comply with these guidelines. From April 1, 2025, they will also have to submit a monthly report to NPCI, which will include:
Total UPI IDs linked to mobile numbers.
Number of active UPI users each month.
Transactions made using updated mobile numbers.
Locally resolved UPI number-based transactions.
How Will These Rules Affect You?
The chances of sending money to the wrong number will be reduced.
UPI transactions will become safer and more efficient.
With banks and UPI apps updating numbers weekly, the risk of failed transactions will decrease.
If you use UPI, keep checking updates from your bank or UPI app to avoid any issues.
