In recent times, UPI (Unified Payments Interface) has become an essential tool for digital transactions in India.
It has revolutionized the way people make payments, from rickshaw pullers to vegetable vendors in remote areas, all of whom accept UPI payments.
But when there is an issue with UPI transactions, even briefly, it can cause major inconvenience for users.
Recent Issues with UPI Payments
Users of popular payment apps like Paytm and Google Pay have reported difficulties in making payments and sending money via UPI.
These problems seem to have escalated over the last week, with users experiencing transaction failures and issues in both sending and receiving money.
This is actually the second incident of UPI-related payment issues this week.
Earlier, users faced similar problems with failed payments, delayed refunds, and even app crashes, leading to frustration and complaints on social media platforms.
What Happened During the Outage?
According to Downdetector, the outage was most widespread around 7:30 PM, during which 51% of users experienced difficulties in transferring funds, and 49% faced problems while trying to make payments.
This caused a lot of inconvenience, as it affected hundreds of users trying to make transactions during that time.
There were some intermittent declines in UPI due to fluctuations in the success rates in some banks. These fluctuations increased the latency in UPI network. NPCI has been working closely with them and UPI has been stable.

What is the Cause?
As of now, the exact cause of the outage is not completely clear. However, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), which oversees the UPI network, has shared an explanation.
According to NPCI, the disruption occurred due to fluctuations in the success rates of transactions from certain banks.
These fluctuations led to increased latency in the UPI network, resulting in delays and failures in completing transactions.
NPCI has assured users that they are actively working with the affected banks to stabilize the system, and that UPI services should now be functioning properly again.
Impact on Users
The disruptions have led to significant inconvenience, with many users turning to social media to express their frustration. Issues reported include:
Failed transactions: Payments not going through, causing confusion.
Delayed refunds: Users not receiving refunds for failed transactions.
App crashes: Some apps stopped working completely, leaving users unable to make or receive payments.
What Can You Do?
Wait for Network Stabilization: As per NPCI, UPI should be stable again after addressing the fluctuations with the banks.
Try Again Later: If you face issues, trying the transaction after some time may help once the network stabilizes.
Contact Support: If the issue persists, contact the customer support teams of apps like Paytm or Google Pay for assistance.
