The process of making Aadhaar cards for children across the country has now become more clear and document-based than before.
If you think you can get an Aadhaar card just with a birth certificate and a photo, then you’re mistaken.
UIDAI has issued new guidelines for child Aadhaar enrollment, which are now in effect.
Now, parents must submit documents from a specified list to get Aadhaar made for their child.
Documents needed for children under 5 years old:
Birth certificate or hospital discharge slip of the child
Aadhaar card of either parent
Proof of relationship to show the child is theirs
A photo where the child is smiling slightly
A UIDAI official said this change will make the Aadhaar process more transparent and ensure accurate records for children.
When to update biometrics:
To confirm a child’s identity, biometric updates are now mandatory at the age of 5 and 15 years.
This includes fingerprint, iris scan, and a new photo. The entire update process is free.
When was Aadhaar card launched?
Aadhaar was launched in India on 28 January 2009, when the Government of India created the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
Its goal was to give every resident a 12-digit unique ID number. The first Aadhaar card was issued to Ranjana Sonawane from Nandurbar, Maharashtra, on 29 September 2010.
This card includes biometric and demographic details and is proof of residence, not citizenship. Today, Aadhaar is the world’s largest digital identity system.
