Telecom regulator TRAI has been actively addressing issues related to unwanted telemarketing calls.
In the first half of this year, TRAI received around 8 lakh complaints about telemarketing companies.
As a result, TRAI has disconnected approximately 2.75 lakh telephone numbers and suspended the services of around 50 companies.
Experts believe that the rise in fake calls prompted TRAI’s stringent measures.
The regulator had previously warned about blacklisting unregistered companies involved in such practices.
Steps Taken by TRAI
TRAI has recently intensified its efforts to tackle unwanted calls and unregistered telemarketing companies.
The telecom regulator has taken the following actions:
- Disconnected 2.75 lakh telephone numbers.
- Suspended services of 50 telemarketing firms.
- Issued instructions to telecom companies to blacklist unregistered telemarketing firms and disconnect their associated numbers.
In a statement, TRAI noted that over 7.9 lakh complaints were filed against unregistered telemarketing firms in the first half of 2024.
To address this, TRAI issued strict guidelines on August 13, 2024, urging immediate action against such companies.
Impact and Future Actions
Telecom companies have responded by blacklisting more than 50 firms and shutting down around 2.75 lakh SIP DIDs, mobile numbers, and other telecom resources.
These measures are expected to reduce fraudulent calls and provide relief to consumers.
TRAI continues to encourage all stakeholders to help create a cleaner and more efficient telecom ecosystem
