TRAI Brings New Guidelines on SIM Card Expiry and Reactivation

In today’s world, mobile phones have become an essential part of life. It’s hard to spend even a few hours without them.

They make many tasks easier, but they also add to our expenses, especially with costly recharge plans.

People often rush to recharge their numbers immediately after the plan expires, fearing disconnection.

However, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has introduced new rules regarding SIM card validity, offering relief to users.

How Long Does Your SIM Stay Active Without Recharge?

Many people don’t know how long their SIM card remains active without a recharge. This often leads to frequent recharges, especially for those using multiple SIM cards.

Recently, TRAI issued guidelines stating that SIM cards can remain active for a set period even after the plan ends, reducing the need for immediate recharges.

Rules for Different Network Providers

Jio Users

Jio SIM cards stay active for 90 days without a recharge. After this period, users must opt for a reactivation plan to keep the number active.

Incoming call availability varies for users, ranging from one day to a month after plan expiration.

If a SIM remains inactive for 90 days, the number will be disconnected and reassigned to another user.

Airtel Users

Airtel SIM cards stay active for 60 days without a recharge. To extend the validity, users need to opt for a Rs 45 validity plan after this period.

Vi Users

Vi (Vodafone Idea) SIM cards can also remain active for 90 days without recharging. After that, a Rs 49 plan is required to maintain the SIM’s validity.

BSNL Users

Government-owned BSNL offers the longest validity without a recharge. Users can keep their SIM active for 180 days after the recharge plan ends, making it the most user-friendly option.
