Meanwhile, Central India will witness a temperature rise. Maharashtra and Gujarat, especially coastal and interior regions, could see an increase of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

Starting April 8, a severe heatwave is expected to affect regions from North India to South India, likely to continue until the end of June.

However, pre-monsoon activities may bring some relief from the intense heat during this period.

Opposing Temperature Trends in North and Central India

According to a private weather forecasting agency, temperatures in northwest and central India will follow contrasting patterns for the rest of the week.

The northern plains will experience a temperature drop due to cold winds reaching Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, Delhi, and Western Uttar Pradesh.

Some parts of Madhya Pradesh may also feel the effect of these winds, leading to a slight drop in temperature.

However, areas not affected by these winds will continue to experience rising temperatures.

Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 36.4 degrees Celsius on Thursday, which was 3.8 degrees higher than the seasonal average.

The minimum temperature stood at 19.5 degrees Celsius, 1.4 degrees above normal. On Friday, temperatures are expected to be lower, with a minimum of 18 degrees Celsius and a maximum of 33 degrees Celsius.

Strong winds contributed to a drop in temperature on Friday, and the Meteorological Department predicts partly cloudy weather and strong winds on March 29 as well.

Heat Alerts and Rising Temperatures in Several States

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a temperature drop of 3 to 4 degrees Celsius in the northern plains over the next few days, while central states will see a rise in temperatures.

Meanwhile, strong thunderstorms and rain are expected in northeastern states, including Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, over the next two days.

Additionally, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand may experience snowfall along with rain.

For the past few days, maximum temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius have been recorded in parts of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Gujarat.

Odisha has reported temperatures exceeding 42 degrees Celsius, which is 4 to 5 degrees above normal, triggering severe heat alerts in these states.

IMD warns that maximum temperatures could break records in the coming days.

Why Are Temperatures Rising in Some States?

According to Sky Met Weather, an east-west ridge has formed around 20 degrees north latitude over Central India, extending across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and its eastern parts.

This ridge blocks cold winds from the north, preventing them from entering Central India, leading to rising temperatures.

Additionally, atmospheric air is getting compressed in this region, intensifying the heat.

Over the next 2-3 days, temperatures in cities such as Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Baroda, Nagpur, Parbhani, Akola, and Solapur are expected to rise by 2 to 3 degrees Celsius.

Even coastal areas like Mumbai may witness a temperature increase, with the mercury reaching 36 to 37 degrees Celsius.

The heatwave’s impact will be more intense in these areas in the coming days.
