Tamil Nadu Newborn Gold Ring Scheme has been launched to provide eligible babies born in government hospitals and primary health centres with a one-gram, 22-carat gold ring.

The scheme, formally launched in Madurai on September 28, applies retrospectively to eligible babies born from June 22, 2026.

The initiative is called the Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, or Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme.

It is based on the traditional Tamil custom in which a maternal uncle presents a gift to a newborn.

The state government has adopted that cultural idea as part of the welfare programme.

Tamil Nadu Newborn Gold Ring Scheme Eligibility

The scheme covers eligible babies born in government hospitals and primary health centres across Tamil Nadu.

The mother must be a permanent resident of the state, and the pregnancy must have been registered through the state’s Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation system with an RCH ID.

The benefit is not restricted to a family’s first child. Babies born as subsequent children can also qualify, and there is no restriction based on the gender of the newborn.

The programme is applicable from June 22, 2026, meaning eligible babies born between that date and the formal launch are also covered.

The government has made arrangements to distribute rings to beneficiaries from this earlier period.

Each Eligible Baby Gets 1-Gram Gold Ring

Each eligible newborn will receive a ring containing one gram of 22-carat gold.

The rings carry unique serial numbers and are supplied in tamper-proof packaging, according to details of the scheme.

The state had procured 1.28 lakh rings for the initial phase of distribution.

The programme is expected to cover a substantially larger number of eligible births as the scheme is rolled out across government healthcare facilities.

The scheme should not be confused with a gold coin distribution programme.

The benefit announced and being distributed to eligible newborns is a one-gram gold ring.

 ₹755.83 Crore Annual Allocation

The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ₹755.83 crore annually for the scheme.

The programme is intended to celebrate childbirth, honour motherhood and encourage more families to choose government healthcare facilities for delivery.

The government has also linked the initiative with its broader focus on maternal and child healthcare.

The scheme is designed to provide a tangible benefit to eligible families while strengthening public confidence in government medical institutions.

The annual requirement is expected to be several lakh rings because government healthcare facilities account for a substantial number of deliveries in the state.

The number of rings distributed will depend on the eligibility conditions and the number of qualifying births.

How the Gold Ring Scheme Will Work

For eligible babies born after the rollout, the ring is expected to be provided through the government healthcare system.

Babies covered retrospectively from June 22 will receive the benefit through designated distribution arrangements.

Mothers may need to provide the required residential and pregnancy-registration documents to establish eligibility.

The government has also created administrative and logistical arrangements to manage distribution and monitor supplies across districts.

The Tamil Nadu Newborn Gold Ring Scheme therefore combines a welfare benefit with a traditional cultural practice.

Its eligibility is tied to government-facility births and the specified registration and residency requirements, rather than being available to every newborn in the state.
