Smart ATMs could soon do much more than dispense cash, with NPCI unveiling an open-source Android-based ATM solution that can instantly issue personalised RuPay debit, credit and NCMC cards and provide several banking services.

The new technology was showcased at Global Fintech Fest 2026 and is designed to take common banking services beyond traditional branches, potentially making card issuance and other services faster and more convenient.

Smart ATMs Can Issue RuPay Cards Instantly

The new ATM solution allows customers to receive personalised RuPay debit, credit and National Common Mobility Cards through a self-service process.

This could reduce the waiting time normally involved in getting a physical card from a bank.

The machines are not limited to card issuance.

NPCI’s solution is also designed to support services such as cheque deposits, account opening and loan applications, making the ATM more like a compact banking access point.

The technology was demonstrated at the Global Fintech Fest 2026, where visitors could experience the open-source Android-based ATMs.

ATMs Could Also Generate UPI QR Codes

The proposed system can also help merchants obtain UPI QR codes instantly for accepting digital payments.

This could be particularly useful for small businesses that need a payment collection facility without a lengthy setup process.

The QR-code feature is intended for merchant collections, while customers can continue using UPI-enabled applications to make payments through supported QR codes.

NPCI has been expanding UPI’s role across payments and banking services, with RuPay credit cards already supporting payments through UPI QR codes at participating merchants.

More Banks Are Exploring the New ATM Model

Nine banks are currently engaging with NPCI and ATM manufacturers to assess the new solution.

These include State Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Central Bank of India, UCO Bank, Slice Small Finance Bank and Airtel Payments Bank.

Banks are also considering the use of these machines as Digital Banking Units in semi-urban and rural locations.

Transit hubs, airports, educational campuses and corporate parks are also being considered as possible locations.

This could make basic banking services more accessible in places where a full bank branch may not be available.

ATMs May Become More Than Cash Machines

The new initiative signals a broader shift in how ATMs could be used in India.

Instead of being restricted mainly to cash withdrawals and deposits, future machines could provide several services traditionally associated with bank branches.

However, the new technology is still being evaluated by banks and ATM manufacturers.

Its availability, services and rollout will depend on participating institutions and deployment plans.

The move comes alongside other financial inclusion initiatives launched at Global Fintech Fest 2026, including UPI-based access to sanctioned credit for eligible Kisan Credit Card and PM MUDRA borrowers and Aadhaar-enabled three-party cash deposits.
