India has reached a historic moment in transportation! The country’s first hydrogen-fueled train is set to begin its trial run on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana.
Developed by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai using indigenous technology, this train is an important step toward a cleaner and greener future.
A Major Step Towards Green Transportation
The hydrogen-powered train will run on an 89 km route and can reach speeds of up to 110 km per hour.
With a powerful 1200-horsepower engine, it can carry up to 2,638 passengers at a time.
The Indian Railway Ministry has invested ₹2800 crore in hydrogen fuel cell-based trains and plans to build 35 such trains.
This 8-coach train is one of the longest hydrogen-powered trains in the world. It offers a more sustainable alternative to traditional trains while ensuring passenger comfort and safety.
Moving Towards a Zero-Carbon Future
The introduction of hydrogen trains is a significant step in reducing carbon emissions and creating a cleaner environment.
The current trial will test its technical capabilities and safety features before it becomes fully operational.
Indian Railways is also working on a special project called ‘Hydrogen for Heritage,’ which aims to run 35 hydrogen trains on heritage and hilly routes.
To support this initiative, ₹2800 crore has been allocated for train production, along with an additional ₹600 crore for building infrastructure on heritage routes.
This project marks a major achievement for India, making the country a leader in green transportation while preserving its historic railway routes.
