Railway to launch India’s 1st Hydrogen-Powered Train by March 31

Indian Railways is set to introduce India’s first hydrogen-powered train by March 31, marking a major step toward sustainable transportation.

This initiative will position India among global leaders such as Germany, France, China, and the United Kingdom in embracing eco-friendly mobility solutions.

As part of its clean energy initiative, the Ministry of Railways allocated ₹2,800 crore in 2023-24 to develop 35 hydrogen fuel cell-based trains.

Designed by the Research Design and Standards Organisation (RDSO), these trains will be completely made in India.

Indigenous Innovation and Deployment Plan

The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai is building India’s first hydrogen-powered train, set to run on the Jind-Sonipat route under Northern Railway’s Delhi Division.

This 89-km stretch will serve as a pilot before expanding to other routes.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that the train is being developed entirely with indigenous technology, showcasing India’s commitment to self-reliance in advanced transportation.

The project involves converting a diesel-electric multiple unit (DEMU) rake by integrating hydrogen fuel cells, marking a major leap in sustainable rail innovation.

A Powerful Innovation in Green Rail Transport

India’s hydrogen-powered train will be one of the most advanced and powerful in the world.

With an impressive 1,200 horsepower (HP), it outperforms similar trains, which usually run on engines ranging from 500 to 600 HP.

Using hydrogen fuel cells, the train will generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, with water vapor as the only byproduct.

This makes it a completely zero-emission solution, taking a significant step toward sustainable and eco-friendly rail travel.

Hydrogen Infrastructure and Safety Measures

Indian Railways is establishing integrated facilities for hydrogen production, storage, and refueling to support the new train.

The Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organisation (PESO) has already granted the necessary safety approvals.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw emphasized the project’s significance in promoting eco-friendly rail transport, reinforcing the commitment to cleaner and sustainable energy solutions for the country’s railway network.
