Railway Pension Rules 2026 have introduced revised provisions for disability pension and family pension for railway employees affected by service-related death or disability.
The new framework replaces the earlier 1993 rules and also covers eligible employees under the National Pension System.
Railway Pension Rules 2026: Key Changes
Under the new rules, railway employees discharged because of qualifying service-related disability can receive a disability pension comprising a service element and a disability element.
The rules provide a minimum disability pension of ₹18,000 per month.
The service element is linked to the normal pension and is calculated at 50% of emoluments or average emoluments, whichever is more beneficial to the employee, subject to the applicable provisions.
₹18,000 Minimum Disability Pension
The revised framework removes the requirement of completing a minimum qualifying service period for earning the service and disability elements in eligible Category B, C and D cases.
The disability pension structure varies according to the category and percentage of disability. For qualifying cases, the overall disability pension cannot be lower than ₹18,000 per month.
Family Pension Provisions for Railway Employees
The rules also provide for extraordinary family pension in cases where a railway employee dies due to circumstances attributable to or aggravated by railway service.
The applicable amount depends on the category of the incident and the conditions prescribed under the rules.
Eligible railway employees covered by the NPS framework can also receive family pension, disability pension and constant attendant allowance where the required option and other conditions are fulfilled.
Who Can Get These Railway Pension Benefits?
The provisions cover specified cases involving death or disability attributable to railway service, including qualifying accidents, occupational hazards, extreme weather conditions and certain other circumstances listed under the rules.
The Railway Pension Rules 2026 came into force from their publication in the Official Gazette and replaced the Railway Services (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 1993.
Existing cases and pending matters are governed by the applicable transitional provisions.
