Railway Extraordinary Pension Rules 2026 have been notified by the Railway Board, replacing the Railway Services (Extraordinary Pension) Rules, 1993.
The new rules cover important pension benefits for railway employees, pensioners and eligible family pensioners.
The rules explain how pension benefits will be determined when a railway employee dies during service or suffers a disability due to service-related circumstances.
They also cover certain employees covered under the National Pension System, subject to the applicable NPS rules.
Railway Extraordinary Pension Rules 2026 Create Four Categories
Under the new rules, cases involving death and disability have been divided into four categories named A, B, C and D. Extraordinary pension benefits are provided for cases falling under categories B and D as specified under the rules.
The rules also provide for extraordinary family pension for eligible family members after the death of a railway employee. The amount of family pension depends on the category applicable to the case.
For eligible family members under category B, the family pension will be 60% of the employee’s salary. For categories C and D, the family pension will be 100% of the employee’s salary, according to the notified provisions.
Disability Pension Has Two Components
The new rules divide disability pension into two components called the service element and disability element.
The service element will be 50% of the employee’s salary or average salary, whichever is higher. For an employee with 100% disability in categories C and D, the disability element will be 30% of the salary or average salary, whichever is higher.
Therefore, for a qualifying employee with 100% disability under categories C and D, the pension structure includes a 50% service element along with a 30% disability element.
Who Can Get Extraordinary Pension Benefits
The new provisions cover railway employees who become disabled because of service-related circumstances. An employee who becomes disabled but continues in service can also qualify for the applicable benefit under the rules.
If a railway employee dies during service, eligible family members can receive extraordinary family pension according to the applicable category and provisions.
Certain employees who are covered by NPS can also receive these benefits if they have opted for the relevant benefits under the 2025 NPS rules and meet the applicable conditions.
No Separate Application for Disability or Family Pension
The notification states that employees or eligible family members do not need to submit a separate application for granting disability pension or family pension.
The head of the office is responsible for examining the case based on the medical board’s report. The new rules also include provisions intended to address issues related to medical board appeals, service-related illnesses, delayed pension payments and attendant allowances.
The Railway Extraordinary Pension Rules 2026 replace the earlier 1993 rules and establish updated provisions for extraordinary pension and family pension benefits for qualifying railway employees and their families.
