With rising temperatures and increasing use of air conditioners, refrigerators, and coolers, electricity bills have become a major concern for many households.

However, people who have installed rooftop solar panels under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana are getting relief from high power costs.

Under this scheme, eligible households can get up to 300 units of free electricity every month, reducing their dependence on regular power supply.

The application process for the scheme is simple and can be completed online through the official portal.

Target of 1 Crore Homes, Over 26 Lakh Already Covered

The PM Surya Ghar Yojana was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2024 with the goal of installing rooftop solar systems in 1 crore houses across India.

According to government data, by March 2026, around 26.19 lakh households had already benefited from the scheme.

The number of beneficiaries continues to increase as more people apply for rooftop solar installations.

How Much Subsidy Is Available?

Under this scheme, households can receive financial support from the government for installing solar panels.

The subsidy amount depends on the capacity of the rooftop solar system and can go up to a maximum of ₹78,000.

The subsidy amount is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account after the required process is completed.

The subsidy structure is:

1 kW to 2 kW solar system: Subsidy ranges from ₹30,000 to ₹60,000.

2 kW to 3 kW solar system: Subsidy ranges from ₹60,000 to ₹78,000.

Above 3 kW systems: Maximum subsidy is limited to ₹78,000.

A solar system capacity is selected based on the household’s electricity needs. Systems suitable for around 150 to 300 units of monthly consumption generally require higher capacity panels.

Solar Panels Can Reduce Electricity Costs for 25 Years

One of the biggest advantages of rooftop solar panels is their long lifespan.

Solar panels installed under the PM Surya Ghar scheme can continue generating electricity for around 25 years.

This means households can enjoy long-term savings and reduce their worries about increasing electricity bills.

Applying for the scheme can be done online through the official portal.
