North Korea set to reopen Borders for International Tourists

North Korea, one of the world’s most isolated nations, is reportedly planning to reopen its borders to international tourists by the end of 2024.

This marks a significant shift for the country, which has been closed off to the outside world for nearly five years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Limited Tourism to Resume

Tour operators based in Beijing and Shenyang, Koryo Tours and KTG Tours, announced on August 15 that North Korea will soon allow tourists to visit the city of Samjiyon,

believed to be the birthplace of former leader Kim Jong Il.

The reopening is expected to begin in December 2024, with details about other destinations,

including the capital Pyongyang, to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Significance of Samjiyon and Mount Paektu

Samjiyon, located near the Chinese border, is close to Mount Paektu, the highest peak on the Korean Peninsula. This mountain holds deep cultural and symbolic importance for Koreans, both in the North and the South.

For North Koreans, reaching the summit is considered a pilgrimage, especially given the mountain’s connection to the ruling Kim family.

Prioritizing Friendly Countries

Although North Korean state media has not officially confirmed the reopening, it is anticipated that tourists from “friendly” countries, such as Russia and China, will be given priority.

This follows earlier instances where Russian tourists were allowed entry during the pandemic, reflecting North Korea’s close ties with Russia.

US Travel Restrictions and Future Developments

Despite these developments, US citizens remain barred from traveling to North Korea unless they receive special approval from the US State Department,

which has classified North Korea as a “Level 4” country, advising against all travel.

In addition to the reopening for tourism, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently inspected a new beach resort project on the country’s east coast, signaling continued efforts to boost tourism.

The Wonsan-Kalma Area resort is expected to open in May 2025, following delays caused by the pandemic and international sanctions.
