No need to File Revised ITR in case of Errors; Use the Discard option

The deadline for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2023-24 and assessment year 2024-25 is just 10 days away.

Errors often occur during this process, especially when taxpayers rush their filings.

Previously, the Income Tax Department required taxpayers to file a revised ITR after completing verification, and revisions without verification were not allowed.

However, a new rule has now been introduced to simplify this process for taxpayers.

Is there an option for Discard ITR?

With the Discard ITR option, you can delete a wrongly filed ITR without needing to complete verification.

This saves you from the hassle of verifying the ITR first and then filing a new one later.

According to the Income Tax Department’s official website,

if you’ve made a mistake in your ITR and want to correct it without verification, you can use the Discard ITR option.

This allows you to delete the incorrect ITR and file a new one without needing to complete the verification process.

How to Refile ITR Using the ‘Discard ITR’ Option

Follow the bwlow process:

  1. Visit the official Income Tax website at www.incometax.gov.in.
  2. Look for the option to e-Verify ITR.
  3. Enter all required details and proceed.
  4. Next, find and select the Discard option.

Clicking on Discard will automatically delete your unverified ITR.

Do not use the Discard ITR option after July 31

According to income tax experts, do not choose the option of discard ITR after July 31,

if you do so, your return will be considered as a fresh return and then in such a situation you will have to pay a penalty for filing ITR late.
