If you drive on the highway, this news is important for you. A small oversight could now lead to higher costs.
We’re talking about the toll tax at highway plazas. The National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new rule for this.
Under the new rule, vehicles without Fastags will now be charged double the toll tax. NHAI has also issued guidelines regarding this change.
NHAI issued these guidelines
Many people often avoid sticking a Fastag on their vehicle’s windscreen. To address this, the NHAI has introduced a new rule for Fastag.
Drivers who intentionally do not use Fastag on their windscreen will now face higher toll taxes.
According to PTI, the guidelines explain that not using Fastag leads to unnecessary delays at toll plazas and inconveniences other vehicles in the queue.
In response, the authority has issued an SOP stating that drivers without Fastag will now be charged double the toll tax.
Monitoring will be done through CCTV
The NHAI’s new guidelines for Fastag include posting information about the rule at all toll plazas. This aims to inform careless drivers about the penalties for not using Fastag.
Besides charging double toll tax, the registration numbers of vehicles without Fastag will be recorded using CCTV footage.
This will help keep accurate records of fees collected and track the vehicles in the toll lanes.
Instructions to banks issuing Fastag:
The Highway Authority has instructed banks and other agencies issuing Fastag to ensure that drivers properly attach the Fastag to their windscreen.
The NHAI stated that, according to existing rules, it plans to enforce the guideline that Fastags must be affixed from the inside on the front windshield of the assigned vehicle.
Fastags that are not affixed to the vehicle according to the standard procedure will not be eligible for Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) transactions.
