The Rajasthan government’s Department of Local Self-Government (DLB) has introduced new rules that make it illegal to start new commercial activities in residential buildings without proper permissions.
The move could affect thousands of people who were planning to run businesses from their homes.
What Has Changed Under the New Rules?
According to the new order, no new licenses will be issued for businesses operating from residential properties.
This means homeowners will no longer be able to convert their houses into shops, offices, or commercial establishments.
However, people who already have licenses issued in 2017 or earlier will get some relief.
They can continue their businesses and renew their existing licenses. Those operating without valid licenses could face action from the authorities.
Starting a Business From Home May Now Be Difficult
Anyone planning to start a new business from home will now need to follow commercial regulations.
This includes obtaining the required commercial license, paying applicable commercial taxes, and, in many cases, shifting the business to a designated commercial property.
Running a business without the necessary approvals or land-use conversion could lead to legal problems and penalties.
Which Businesses Could Be Affected?
The new rules cover a wide range of small businesses commonly operated from homes.
These include:
Grocery stores
Dairy shops
General stores
Beauty parlors
Boutiques
Sewing and tailoring centers
Men’s salons
Coaching centers
Tuition classes
Computer training centers
In addition, offices and consultancy services will not be allowed to operate from residential premises without proper commercial approval.
